State pension payments may change over the New Year holidays for some people

More than 12.4 million elderly people across the UK are currently receiving regular monthly payments through their state pension, including 981,399 Scots.

The state pension is delivered by the Department of Labor and Pensions (DWP) every four weeks between Monday and Friday – there are no payment dates on weekends – but these change occasionally due to public holidays, such as the New Year.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) confirmed changes to Working Tax Credits and Child Benefit payment dates back on New Year’s weekend, and now DWP has announced changes to scheduled payments for older people in Scotland, England and Wales.

Anyone scheduled to receive their state pension on Tuesday, December 28th or Wednesday, December 29th, should have their payment received by Friday, December 24th.

Similarly, Monday 3rd January and Tuesday 4th January are also bank holidays, but only in Scotland, which means payments will also land in accounts earlier – Friday 31st December.

If you’re not sure when your state pension is due, just check the last two digits of your social security number.

The last two digits and payment days:

  • 00 to 19 – paid on a Monday
  • 20 to 39 – paid on a Tuesday
  • 40 to 59 – paid on a Wednesday
  • 60 to 79 – paid on a Thursday
  • 80 to 99 – paid on a Friday
